Tata says Nano is safe, plans Superdrive to assure customers

After multiple news stories of burnt Tata Nano’s were flashed across India, Tata Motor had undertaken a comprehensive investigation conducted by a 20-member internal team and an independent forensic expert to find the root cause of these incidents.

Investigation have revealed that the incidents in the two burnt cars, which were being transported to or from dealers, were isolated instances and the reasons are unrelated.

In the Mumbai incident in March 2010, which took place as the car was being driven from dealer to customer’s residence, it was found that remnants of a foreign object were on the hot exhaust system which most probably led to combustion.

In second incident which occurred in Gujarat’s Anand district in April 2010, where a Nano was being delivered to a dealership, there was evidence of a ruptured fuel line.

According to Tata Motors, investigators’ conclusion that the Tata Nano is safe and robust is also visible in the problem free driving experience of thousands of owners since deliveries from July 2009. The company has, notwithstanding, decided that it will allay any concerns by owners by inspecting all cars with customers and, where necessary, add additional protection to ensure the car’s safety. Beginning May 24th, each owner will be individually contacted over the next few weeks to fix appointments for such inspections. These inspections would be provided free of cost to the customers.

According to Tata Motors, these inspections do not constitute a recall.

In an attempt to show its customers that Nano is safe, Tata Motors is also planning a Superdrive for Nano, which will be flagged off on the 2nd of June 2010 from factory gates at Sanand on three different routes covering 15,000kms over a period of 26 days.

What is more interesting is the fact that these Nanos will be driven by customers, who can register for the drive online from May 26 onwards, nine people will be chosen from all the applicants, who will then be divided into three different teams.

Each team would be assigned one of the three planned route; Saffron Route, White Route and the Green Route and will have 26 days to cover them.

Saffron Route will cover North India, traveling from Sanand to Pali (Rajasthan), Haryana, Amritsar, New Delhi, Aligarh, UP, Bhind, Gwalior, Kota and back to Sanand.

White Route would cover Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

While the Green Route will travel from Sanand to Ahmedabad, Vadodra, Mumbai, Goa, Mysore, Ernakulam, Chennai, Bangalore and Nashik.
